FRIDAY FUN FACT - SWISS INVENTIONS & INNOVATIONS. Did you know?! The Rex vegetable peeler – Alfred Neweczerzal (1947) The Rex vegetable peeler was invented and patented by Alfred Neweczerzal in 1947. Thanks to copycats, it is widely known as the ‘Y peeler’. While one story goes that he came up with the gadget after becoming fed up peeling potato after potato in the military, his design definitely revolutionized kitchens across the world. Crafted from a single piece of aluminium, the original Rex was fast to produce, cheap to buy yet of high quality – and easy to use for left-handers and right-handers alike. Another legend goes that a family asked Alfred’s grandson to replace the original Rex’s non-replaceable blade after sixty years of service! To this day, his grandson continues to produce to the same pattern, but in stainless steel or burnished carbon steel. Does it surprise you that Velcro® was invented, patented and registered in Switzerland? Hunting in the Jura mountains, a Swiss engineer noticed that certain seeds were attaching themselves to his clothes, as well as to his dog –and they were nigh on impossible to remove. On closer inspection, these ‘burrs’ seemed to have tiny hooks, attaching them tightly to fibres and hair. With help from friends in the weaving industry, Georges de Mestral managed to replicate this ‘hook and loop’ fastening method in an invention. He named it velcro, from the French velour and crochet (velvet and hook). Based at The Mill Castlemaine, Long Paddock Cheese is a small-scale Australian artisan cheesemaker, recognised as one of the best in Australia. We create deliciously-different hand-made cheeses, mainly in the French style but with a definite Australian identity. Our globally-renowned cheesemaker, Ivan Larcher, heads a small-but-skilled team making soft and semi-hard cheeses and fresh dairy products, perfectly ripened and beautifully packaged. All our products are hand-made from certified-organic cow's milk from a nearby family-owned farm, delivered to us several times a week. Also at Long Paddock Cheese, The Cheese School runs professional artisan cheesemaking and other dairy training, a range of small-scale business-related training, as well as training for cheesemongers, regulators, home cheesemakers and cheeselovers. It also serves as a base from which we run consulting work and small-scale events. Malady Designs has evolved over the last 15 years to it's current state of producing individual handcrafted wooden pieces. All products are created in the workshop by hand using both traditional and modern techniques, always with an eye on design, craftsmanship and presentation. The experience and skill gained over the last decade allows Tracey Malady to be able to create pieces that are both functional and aesthetic. They are super cute and were designed just for our festival! You'll find them in our Swiss Pantry "Chuchichaestli" amongst many Swiss yummies! Besides bringing all her usual yummy home made chocolates, Laetitia cooked up a special edition just for the festival! There are only 50 small bars and 20 blocks of this edition so I'd head there first thing! You can find her stall inside the building. She's using only the finest Felchlin chocolate!

Made of stainless steel, it is 8m high and 1.3m wide. It was designed by a sculptor from Neuchâtel, Switzerland and embedded in the lake in February 1995 to commemorate the Alimentarium’s tenth anniversary. It was initially intended to grace the lakeshore in front of the Museum for one year. In 1996, despite backing from the town of Vevey, the Alimentarium did not obtain authorisation for the fork to stay.
